Stability of water in straw
When you put your finger over the end of a drinking straw in a glass of water, you can lift up the straw and the water remains inside it. Why?
When you put your finger over the end of the straw (and get a good seal) then lift it from the glass, the water level in the straw actually falls a little. The pressure of the atmosphere at the bottom of the straw balances the pressure inside the straw at the top plus the hydrostatic pressure. (Source)
